The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal filed by the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala, against the election of Muhammad Yahaya Inuwa as governor of Gombe state. The appeal was dismissed on Thursday, January 18, after the appellants withdrew it. This ruling was made by a five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
This is in relation to the tussle over the Gombe governorship seat, which has been a subject of contention since the elections in March 2023. The opposition had been challenging Governor Inuwa’s re-election bid.
During the hearing at the Supreme Court, the panel confronted the appellant’s counsel, Herbert Nwoye, on the incompetence of his client’s case and the need not to waste the court’s time. Following this, Nwoye applied to withdraw the appeal, and the respondents did not oppose it, leading to the appeal’s dismissal.
This decision by the Supreme Court settles the dispute over Inuwa’s reelection as the Governor of Gombe state. As the legal process concludes, the focus in the state is expected to shift towards governance and addressing the pertinent issues facing the state’s residents.
The dismissal of the ADC’s appeal is a significant development in the political landscape of Gombe state, serving to reaffirm Inuwa’s position as the duly elected governor. With this, Inuwa’s administration can continue its governance, emphasizing the need for unity and progress for the betterment of the state and its people.
The ruling also denotes the conclusion of the legal battle over the governorship seat, providing a clearer path forward for Inuwa and his administration as they steer the affairs of Gombe state. This resolution is anticipated to bring a new focus on the socio-economic and developmental aspects of the state, ensuring that good governance and progress are prioritized.
