Deep on the edge of Uganda’s vast Budongo Forest Reserve, about 35 kilometres from Masindi town, lies a little-known chapter of World War II history.

Hidden among towering trees and winding roads is the former Nyabyeya Polish Refugee Settlement, a place that offered sanctuary to thousands of Polish civilians fleeing war, deportation and persecution more than eight decades ago.
