The Nigerian Medical Association is gearing up for the highly anticipated 7th edition of the NMA Games, set to kick off tomorrow and run until Saturday, February 24. The event will take place at the University of Lagos Sports complex and the Ikeja Golf Course, and will see over 1,000 doctors from seven regional zones gather to compete in various sporting events such as football and chess.
The NMA Games are not only a celebration of athletic prowess, but also serve to promote camaraderie and wellness among Nigeria’s esteemed physicians and medical professionals. Looking back on the history of the NMA Games, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, Chairman of NMA Lagos Zone and Head LOC for NMA National Games Eko 2024, emphasized the resilience displayed during the 6th edition in Abeokuta amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recognizing the selfless dedication of medical professionals across the country, Olowojebutu stressed the importance of acknowledging their invaluable contributions to society, particularly in the current national circumstances. The South-South zone has emerged victorious in the last two editions, showcasing the spirit of competitiveness and excellence within the medical community.
Olowojebutu further highlighted the significance of the NMA Games as a platform to promote physical and mental well-being among medical professionals, stating that Eko 2024 exemplifies how sports can contribute to a healthier lifestyle and sharper minds, especially in the face of demanding professional responsibilities.
National Games Master, Dr. Israel Jeremiah, revealed that this year’s edition will feature a total of 12 competitive games. In addition to the sporting events, the NMA Doctors’ Games will include musical and cultural showcases, networking opportunities, and special ceremonies to honor outstanding athletes and participants. A pre-games scientific conference was also held to address the intersection of medicine and sports science, emphasizing the importance of health and fitness advancement.
The event is expected to be graced by esteemed dignitaries such as the Minister of Health, Professor Ali Pate, and the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Their presence at the NMA Games reflects the significance of the event within the medical community and beyond.
