The GSMA recently launched the Mobile Economy China 2024 report in anticipation of the Post MWC Sharing Event in Beijing, China. The report highlights the rapid growth of 5G technology in the country, with projections indicating that more than half of Chinese mobile connections will be 5G by the end of 2024. This significant increase in 5G adoption is expected to have a substantial impact on the Chinese economy, with 5G’s contribution to GDP predicted to reach nearly $260 billion by 2030.

Director-General of the GSMA, Mats Granryd, praised China for its commitment to the GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative, aimed at driving the growth and maturity of 5G technology. Granryd noted that China, as the world’s largest 5G market, has already surpassed one billion 5G connections this year. The country is poised to lead the global market in 5G adoption, with projections indicating that 5G connections in China will account for almost a third of the global total by 2030. With 5G adoption in China expected to reach nearly 90 per cent, the country is well-positioned to become one of the leading markets for 5G technology worldwide.

The 5G market in China continues to mature rapidly, leading to increased connections and broader economic value. The speed of network deployments and the maturing device ecosystem have contributed to the accelerated growth of 5G adoption in the country. Already, more than 800 million Chinese mobile connections are 5G-enabled, with projections indicating that this number will surpass one billion by the end of 2024. This year, the proportion of 5G connections is expected to exceed 50 per cent, making 5G the dominant mobile technology in China.

With 1.28 billion unique mobile subscribers and a penetration rate of 88 per cent, mobile technology has become a vital component of the Chinese economy. In 2023, mobile technology contributed $970 billion, or 5.5 per cent of GDP, to the Chinese economy. The overall mobile ecosystem supports nearly 8 million jobs and contributes $110 billion annually through taxation. Operator revenues in China reached $225 billion in 2023, indicating the significant role of the mobile sector in driving economic growth.

Looking ahead, the report forecasts that the annual economic contribution from China’s mobile sector will exceed $1 trillion by the end of the decade. This growth is attributed to the continued expansion of 5G technology and the increasing adoption of mobile services across various sectors of the economy. With China poised to lead the global market in 5G technology, the country is well-positioned to continue driving economic growth and innovation in the coming years.
