The Kisii County Government is currently facing internal turmoil as a group of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have initiated the process of impeaching Deputy Governor Robert Monda. The motion has already garnered the support of 51 MCAs, raising concerns about the motives behind the impeachment and the potential impact on the county’s leadership dynamics.
The motion was tabled by Ichuni Ward MCA Mr. Wycliffe Siocha, who accused Dr. Monda of violating the Constitution of Kenya (2010), abuse of office, and gross misconduct. Nominated MCA Carren Magara stated that the impeachment process is underway, with a commitment to following due process and ensuring fairness for the deputy governor. It has been alleged that Dr. Monda has not been effectively executing his duties, prompting the impeachment motion. Nyamache MCA Naftal Onkoba urged Governor Simba Arati to maintain a fair distance from the impeachment process to allow for unbiased administrative action.
The rift between Deputy Governor Monda and Governor Arati became apparent towards the end of last year when Dr. Monda raised concerns about governance issues and a perceived lack of development progress. The governor accused Dr. Monda of colluding with opposition leaders, leading to heightened tensions between the two leaders.
Senator Richard Onyonka has expressed concerns about the implications of the ongoing leadership tensions on service delivery in the county. He emphasized the need for effective governance and expressed his commitment to conducting oversight in the impeachment process.
Amid the impeachment storm, Dr. Monda reiterated his commitment to addressing issues related to development and the efficient operation of the county government. However, he expressed his eagerness to understand the specific accusations against him in the impeachment motion. Dr. Monda also mentioned that he is maintaining communication with Governor Arati despite the escalating tensions.
The brewing conflict within the Kisii County Government has raised questions about the underlying factors driving the impeachment motion and the potential consequences for governance and public service delivery. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are closely monitoring the developments and awaiting a resolution to the internal power struggle.
