A massive explosion caused by stored explosives rocked more than 20 buildings in Nigeria’s Ibadan city, resulting in three fatalities and 77 injuries, according to authorities. The blast, which occurred in the Bodija area of the southwestern state of Oyo, is believed to have been caused by explosives used in illegal mining operations.
Residents of Ibadan heard the blast on Tuesday night, prompting panic and evacuations. The following morning, security forces cordoned off the affected area while rescue workers, medical personnel, and ambulances were deployed for search and rescue efforts.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the devastating impact of the blast and announced the deployment of first responders and relevant agencies for comprehensive rescue operations. As the search continued, an additional body was recovered, bringing the death toll to three.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with a promise from the governor to hold those responsible accountable. Many of the injured have been discharged from hospitals, with the governor pledging to cover medical bills for those still admitted and provide temporary accommodation for those whose homes were affected.
The use of explosives in illegal mining is a common concern in Nigeria, especially in mineral-rich areas. Anthony Adejuwon of the Urban Alert group emphasized the lack of control over the storage and use of explosives, posing significant health hazards to nearby residents.
The incident highlights the dangers of unregulated mining practices and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety measures in such operations. As rescue efforts continue and the investigation progresses, authorities are focused on providing support to those affected while addressing the broader issue of illegal mining and the use of explosives in residential areas.
