The Kenyan government has issued a plea for citizens to come together and offer their support to the survivors of the tragic gas explosion in Embakasi. Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura stressed the importance of donations of items and blood in helping those affected by the incident and emphasized the spirit of brotherhood in providing assistance during this difficult time.
Mwaura specified that donations should be directed to the command centre and various hospitals, including Kenyatta National Hospital and KU Referral Hospital. Additionally, the UN Resident Coordinator has already mobilized essential items such as blankets, sleeping mats, tarpaulins, and kitchen sets from the UNHCR to assist the victims.
A collaborative effort involving multiple agencies has resulted in the distribution of food items such as bags of rice, beans, corned beef, and drinking water to those affected by the tragedy. Furthermore, non-food items including blankets, plates, spoons, soap, sanitary towels, and portable stoves are being supplied to meet the everyday needs of the victims.
The Nairobi County government is also playing a crucial role by providing temporary housing for victims in various halls and offering ready-to-eat food, ensuring their immediate sustenance. In addition, the Kenya Red Cross and UNFPA have raised supplies such as sanitary towels, undergarments, mama kits, dignity kits, beds, blankets, mosquito nets, jerricans, bed sheets, and pillows.
The Ministry of Health has distributed trauma kits across various hospitals, increased the number of medical personnel, coordinated patient referrals, provided blood products, offered psychosocial support, and ensured nutrition for lactating mothers. They have also focused on addressing the economic impact of the tragedy, particularly for the 72 business units that were destroyed in the incident.
The Ministry of Trade has been tasked with addressing the economic impact of the tragedy, with a specific focus on the needs of the affected businesses. The efforts of the Ministry of Interior and the police in providing security and coordinating logistics have been instrumental in ensuring a safe and orderly environment for the ongoing relief efforts.
The World Health Organization has also contributed to the medical response by supplying 500 emergency kits designed for the treatment of burns and fractures, addressing the urgent medical needs arising from the tragic incident.
In conclusion, the government’s appeal for support from the public has resulted in a coordinated effort to provide essential assistance to the survivors of the Embakasi gas tragedy. The collaborative support from various organizations and government agencies demonstrates the spirit of unity and compassion during this challenging time.
