Kentainers Limited has issued a statement distancing itself from the gas explosion that occurred in Embakasi, Nairobi. The explosion took place on Thursday night and resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals, as well as injuries sustained by over 280 others. In the wake of this devastating incident, Kentainers Limited has clarified that they had relocated their operations to Nairobi Gate Industrial Park in the Northlands area. The company emphasized that the explosion did not take place at their former premises in Embakasi.

Expressing their condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, Kentainers Limited also extended their well wishes for the speedy recovery of the survivors. The company commended the prompt response and assistance provided by various institutions, including the national police, Nairobi County Government, the Kenya Red Cross, St. John’s Ambulance, and the public.

Media reports have indicated that the explosion occurred at a gas filling depot near Kabansora in Embakasi, Nairobi. In response, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stated that the county has taken measures to provide shelter to families affected by the gas explosion, with nearly 250 affected families being identified. The governor assured that all casualties from the incident had received medical attention, with Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital treating 216 patients and addressing an unexpected shortage of burns-related medication.

Furthermore, President William Ruto has issued a strong warning to the owner of the gas plant and directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to track down and apprehend the responsible individual. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua echoed the president’s stance, emphasizing the illegal nature of the gas filling station and the need for accountability.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki and Energy counterpart Davis Chirchir released a joint statement announcing the government’s intention to demolish all illegal gas filling sites through the Multi-Agency Rapid Results Initiative. They also emphasized that punitive administrative measures would be imposed on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) operators found filling cylinders without the written authority of the brand owners.

The tragic gas explosion in Embakasi has spurred a concerted effort by the government to address illegal gas operations and ensure the safety of the public. Kentainers Limited has taken the opportunity to distance itself from the incident and extend its support to the affected families. As investigations continue and measures are put in place to prevent similar tragedies, the focus remains on providing assistance to those impacted by the devastating explosion.
