A massive gas explosion wreaked havoc in the Embakasi area of Nairobi, causing widespread damage, injuries, and fatalities. The incident occurred when a truck carrying gas cylinders exploded at Mradi Area around 11:30 pm on Thursday, as confirmed by Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura. The explosion triggered a massive fireball that engulfed the surrounding area, causing extensive damage to vehicles, commercial properties, and residential houses. The Oriental Godown, which specialized in garments and textiles, was also destroyed when a flying gas cylinder hit the building.
The impact of the explosion resulted in three fatalities and more than 270 injuries. The injured individuals are receiving treatment at various hospitals, with 21 at the Kenyatta National Hospital, 160 at Mama Lucy General Hospital, 19 at Mbagathi Hospital, 14 at Modern Komarock Hospital, and eight at Nairobi West Hospital. In response to the urgent need for blood donations, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris appealed to the public to step forward and donate blood to aid the blast survivors.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Nairobi county government waived all medical fees for the victims of the Embakasi fire incident. Governor Johnson Sakaja emphasized the importance of providing support to those affected, stating that relief items are being mobilized to ensure the comfort of all individuals impacted by the tragedy. Additionally, a command center has been established to coordinate rescue operations and other intervention efforts.
