The Ministry of Health in Kenya is making a desperate plea to the public in light of the recent tragedy in Embakasi. A horrific gas explosion at a storage and refilling depot has left three dead and over 280 others seriously injured. The injured have been distributed among several hospitals in the area, with 21 at Kenyatta National Hospital, 160 at Mama Lucy General Hospital, 19 at Mbagathi Hospital, 14 at the Modern Komarock Hospital, and eight at Nairobi West Hospital.

The Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service (KNBTS) is calling on Kenyans to donate blood to help those affected by the explosion. The Ministry of Health is urging willing donors to present themselves at the Nairobi Region Blood Transfusion Centre (RBTC), KNH Helipad Square, and Mama Lucy Hospital Satellite. In a statement, Medical Services PS Harry Kimtai announced that the KNBTS has activated its blood centers nationwide to expedite the sending of blood to the Nairobi RBTC for immediate dispatch to the affected hospitals.

Kimtai emphasized the critical need for blood and blood components transfusions for individuals with severe injuries as a result of the fire. As a response to the tragedy, the ministry has put in place mechanisms to address the blood needs of the victims. Blood establishments at Mama Lucy Hospital, Nairobi RBTC, and KNH are on high alert to respond to the casualties’ needs.

Additionally, the Nairobi RBTC has ample blood components, including fresh frozen plasma (FFP) that will be crucial in the care of burn victims. In a compassionate gesture, the Nairobi County Government has waived all medical fees for the survivors of the tragedy. Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura explained that the explosion occurred after a lorry carrying gas cylinders exploded.

The Ministry of Health is urging the public to donate blood to help those affected by the gas explosion. Through the KNBTS, blood donation sites have been established at strategic locations to make the process as convenient as possible for willing donors. The generous contributions of blood will significantly aid in the recovery and care of those injured in this tragic event.

Furthermore, the ministry has taken immediate action to ensure that hospitals are equipped with sufficient blood and blood components to address the urgent need arising from the explosion. Their dedication to mobilizing resources and support for the victims and their families demonstrates a commitment to providing necessary care and assistance in times of crisis.

In the wake of this devastating incident, it is imperative for the community to come together and show solidarity with those impacted by the explosion. Donating blood is a direct and tangible way for individuals to contribute to the recovery efforts. The support and generosity of donors will play a crucial role in assisting the victims and their families as they navigate through this challenging and traumatic time. The Ministry of Health is calling on the public to rally behind the victims and make a meaningful difference by donating blood.
