During a thanksgiving prayer service at All Angels Cathedral Grounds in Bondo, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs spoke out about the dangers of social media for the youth. He warned that technology can be good but also dangerous, and urged caution when embracing it. Mudavadi highlighted the presence of online predators and emphasized the need for leaders to send a message to the youth about the risks of interacting with strangers on social media.
His remarks came in the wake of nationwide protests against the rising cases of femicide in Kenya. Reports of at least a dozen femicide cases since the beginning of the year have sparked public outrage and prompted demonstrations in various parts of the country. Women marched in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, carrying placards demanding an end to femicide.
The Legio Maria Church also advised women to exercise caution in their relationships and not to trust strangers easily in light of the increased cases of femicide. Bishop Wycliffe Nyapera warned against being deceived by looks, promises, and fancy words.
Additionally, female Parliamentarians urged President William Ruto to declare femicide and other forms of Gender Based Violence a national disaster. The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) called on the authorities to expedite investigations into the ongoing femicide cases and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga also weighed in on the issue, stating that the murders should not become the new norm in society.
In conclusion, Mudavadi’s warning to the youth about the dangers of social media, coupled with the widespread public outcry and demands for action from various quarters, reflects the deep concern and urgency to address the escalating problem of femicide in Kenya. It also underscores the need for a collective effort to protect the youth and ensure the safety and well-being of all members of society.
