Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga shared poignant memories of his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, during a memorial service in Kisumu. Speaking on Saturday, Oburu recounted a moment of disagreement with his father, when Jaramogi urged him to step away from politics. Reflecting on the time, Oburu remembered his concern for his father’s health, as he had observed Jaramogi’s significant weight loss due to his political involvement.
Despite his son’s plea, Jaramogi remained resolute in his commitment to serving the people through politics. He emphasized to Oburu that his dedication to politics surpassed all other aspects of his life, including business. Jaramogi’s unwavering stance left a lasting impression on Oburu, who acknowledged his father’s firm belief in the significance of politics in his life.
As the elder brother of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, Oburu also highlighted the impact of Jaramogi’s legacy as a prominent political figure and freedom fighter in Kenya’s journey to independence. Jaramogi’s contributions to the nation included serving as the Minister for Home Affairs in 1963 and later becoming the Vice President under Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in 1964.
January 20, 2024, will mark the 30th anniversary of Jaramogi’s passing, serving as a reminder of his enduring influence on Kenya’s political landscape. Oburu’s reflections offered a glimpse into the profound connection he shared with his father, whose unwavering dedication to politics has left an indelible mark on the history of the nation.
