Former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta attended the memorial service of the late Mzee Jaramogi Oginga Odinga on Saturday. Mzee Jaramogi passed away on January 20, 1994 in Kisumu, and the service was held at St. Stephen’s Cathedral Church in Kisumu. Margaret was seen sitting beside Siaya Governor James Orengo during the service, and the leaders were seated in the front row as they followed the memorial service.
The memorial service was organized by Azimio leader Raila Odinga, who is Jaramogi’s son, to celebrate and honor his father’s legacy and place in Kenya’s history. Raila invited renowned scholars, pan-Africanists, thought leaders, and journalists to speak at the event, which fell exactly 30 years after the founding Vice President’s death.
Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga was a prominent political figure and one of the leaders of Kenya’s freedom fighters who helped secure the country’s independence. Born in October 1911, he was appointed minister for home affairs in 1963 and became vice president under founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in 1964. However, he was a fierce critic of Kenyatta and served as VP from December 12, 1964, to April 14, 1966, when he resigned. He remained a vocal opposition leader until his death.
The memorial service was an opportunity to reflect on Jaramogi’s contributions to Kenya and to honor his dedication and commitment to the nation. The event brought together leaders, dignitaries, and members of the community to pay their respects and commemorate the life of Mzee Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. As the nation remembered his passing, it also celebrated the lasting impact he had on the country and its journey to independence.
