Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria arrived in Kisumu for the memorial service of Mzee Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, who was Kenya’s founding Vice President and passed away 30 years ago. Kuria’s arrival at the event was warmly received by the crowd, and he took the opportunity to greet the leaders present, including the Azimio leader, Raila Odinga, who organized the memorial service.
The event took place at St Stephen’s Cathedral Church in Kisumu, where Raila, Jaramogi’s youngest son, organized the service to celebrate and honor his father’s legacy and his important role in Kenya’s history. Renowned scholars, pan-Africanists, thought leaders, and journalists were invited to speak at the event to commemorate Jaramogi’s contributions as one of the leaders of Kenya’s freedom fighters who helped secure the country’s independence.
Moses Kuria, known as a diehard supporter and close ally of President William Ruto, has been a vocal critic of Raila in the past. However, in September 2023, Kuria detailed his close ties with the Odinga family, recalling how Raila’s father, Oginga Odinga, saved him from being kicked out of the University of Nairobi. Kuria also reflected on the support he received from Jaramogi, saying, “A man who instructed Otieno Kajwang to represent me in court and get an injunction that stopped me from being expelled from UoN.”
The memorial service was an opportunity for political leaders to come together and honor the important legacy of Mzee Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. The event provided a platform to reflect on Kenya’s history, the contributions of its founding leaders, and the ongoing relationships between political figures who, despite their differences, come together to honor the past and work towards a better future for the country.
