Harriette Chiggai, the Women Rights Advisor to the President, issued a strong warning to perpetrators of gender-based violence, declaring that their days are numbered. Speaking on Friday, Chiggai emphasized the government’s determination to apprehend the suspects and urged the judiciary to expedite cases of intimate partner violence.

During a women leaders press conference in Nairobi, Chiggai, along with other women leaders, condemned the violence against women and girls and called for collective action to address the issue. She also expressed her commitment to working with the judiciary to ensure that survivors of gender-based violence are treated with dignity in court and that their cases do not face unnecessary delays.

Chiggai reaffirmed the Kenya Kwanza administration’s dedication to ending all forms of violence, particularly intimate partner violence. She emphasized the need for a collaborative effort from all stakeholders and promised to work with women Members of Parliament to advocate for harsher penalties for intimate partner violence cases due to their misogynistic nature.

In her role as the Women’s Rights Advisor to the President, Chiggai passionately spoke out against rising cases of intimate partner violence and cautioned against victim blaming, emphasizing that no one deserves to be subjected to such violence. She encouraged young girls to be cautious about their interactions on social platforms and called on religious leaders to use their influence to promote positive attitudes towards women and to advocate for women’s rights as human rights.

Chiggai also addressed the insensitive remarks made about victims of gender-based violence, expressing condolences to the families affected and confirming that psychosocial support and safe spaces for women and children are a priority for her office. She announced plans to visit various counties to engage with women and children and to gather input on how the government can better respond to women’s issues in the country.
