The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Information, Communications and Digital Economy, Eliud Owalo, officially launched jitume digital hubs and public Wi-Fi at the Bungoma North Technical and Vocational College in Tongaren Constituency. The purpose of this initiative is to provide the youth with access to digital knowledge and skills.

The event, which took place on Friday, was presided over by Bungoma Deputy Governor Jenipher Mbatiany. During his address, CS Owalo highlighted the limited employment opportunities in the traditional job market and emphasized the abundance of jobs in the digital space. He stated that the Kenya Kwanza government is investing heavily in the digital space to create job opportunities for unemployed young people.

Furthermore, CS Owalo expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that young people receive training in digital skills. He announced plans to establish a digital hub in every ward in the country to benefit the youth. This initiative is part of the Kenya Kwanza government’s effort to empower young people and aligns with President Ruto’s digital superhighway agenda.

The primary objective of the digital ICT hubs in technical training colleges in Kenya is to provide young people with access to digital skills, e-services, and online job opportunities, according to CS Owalo. He stressed the government’s determination to empower young people by deploying computers and setting up public Wi-Fi.

During the launch, CS Owalo was joined by PS ICT Eng. John Tanui, PS Broadcasting and Telecommunications Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani, Bungoma County CEC for Education Dr. David Wamamili, and Tongaren MP John Chikati. The CS also inaugurated the digital ICT hub at the Bungoma National Polytechnic and public Wi-Fi at the Bungoma bus park in Bungoma town.

Speaking at the Bungoma bus park, Kanduyi MP John Makali commended the government’s efforts to establish public Wi-Fi in all wards, noting that it will provide opportunities for job seekers to connect with international jobs. He echoed CS Owalo’s statement about the government’s intention to establish digital ICT hubs across all wards, enabling young people to access international job opportunities.

MP Makali also urged the public to utilize the public Wi-Fi wisely. The launch of the jitume digital hubs and public Wi-Fi marks an important step in the government’s commitment to promoting digital skills and job opportunities for young people across Kenya.
