Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has spoken out against leaders who are already engaging in succession politics for the 2027 elections. He believes that focusing on succession at this point is not only disrespectful to the voters but also unjust. Sakaja emphasized the importance of concentrating on delivering services to the people rather than plotting for the next elections.

During an interview with The Star, Governor Sakaja expressed his administration’s commitment to thinking about the next generation through various projects. He highlighted initiatives such as the Dishi na county program, which aims to provide meals to children, and the significant increase in bursaries issued by his administration. Sakaja proudly announced that within a year, his administration had allocated Sh1.8 billion for bursaries, surpassing more than half of what had been done in the previous 10 years.

In addition to the bursary program, Sakaja unveiled a Sh857 million initiative to benefit financially challenged students in Nairobi. He also urged other leaders to refrain from engaging in succession talks at this time and instead focus on supporting the agenda of President William Ruto.

Sakaja stressed that the matter of succession should be left to the voters and that leaders should show respect for the current president. He cautioned against premature and unnecessary discussions about the 2027 and 2032 elections, emphasizing the need for leaders to remain focused on serving the people.

Despite Sakaja’s warnings, politicians have already started campaigning and lobbying for the 2027 elections. Some Ukambani leaders have called for Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka to begin campaigning for the presidency, asserting that 2027 will be his time. Meanwhile, a group of Murang’a leaders has expressed their endorsement for Kiharu Member of Parliament Nyoro to serve as the deputy to President Ruto in the 2027 general election. Wiper leader Kalonzo also believes that the Azimio la Umoja Coalition should agree on the 2027 lineup this year, and Democratic Action Party of Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa has declared his interest in the 2027 presidential race.
