President William Ruto has called for a Cabinet retreat in early February to evaluate the performance of the Kenya Kwanza administration. The retreat will provide an opportunity for Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries to discuss their accomplishments and shortcomings, as well as to outline plans for improvement in order to fulfill the promises of the Kenya Kwanza manifesto.

This initiative comes after President Ruto expressed concerns about the lack of awareness among several Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries regarding developments within their ministries. During the signing of performance contracts by CSs, PSs, and Parastatal Heads on August 1, Ruto questioned their level of competence in managing their respective dockets. He highlighted the issue of many officials being unaware of the activities within their ministries, deeming it as a high level of incompetence.

The upcoming February retreat will mark the third such meeting for the Ruto administration. The previous retreat took place on November 16, 2023, in Nairobi, where the Cabinet assessed the progress of the administration in its first year in office. The event, known as the ‘National Executive Pitstop retreat,’ provided a platform for each ministry to present its achievements and challenges under the Kenya Kwanza government.

The retreat is scheduled at a time when there is growing public concern over the rising cost of living in Kenya. It will serve as an opportunity for the government to address these issues and strategize on ways to ease the burden on the citizens.

Overall, the Cabinet retreat in February is expected to facilitate discussions on critical issues facing the Kenya Kwanza administration and pave the way for enhanced performance and delivery of the government’s promises to the people.
