Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, the spouse of the Deputy President, is advocating for an increase in capitation for schools catering to children living with disabilities. She expressed her concerns during a visit to the ACK St. Monica School for the Mentally Challenged in Embu, where she highlighted the inadequate provisions and resources for these students.

Dorcas emphasized the importance of inclusive education for differently abled individuals and urged for a reconsideration of their capitation, as well as provisions for their teachers and basic necessities like food. She criticized the lack of essential facilities in schools for children with disabilities, stating that it is unacceptable for them to go without proper amenities for learning.

Furthermore, she called upon both national and county government officials to address the challenges faced by Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), acknowledging the additional physical and mental obstacles they encounter in their lives. Dorcas stressed the need for legislative action to protect the rights and welfare of PWDs and ensure that educational institutions are equipped to support their learning and everyday needs.

As the patron of the Special Olympics Kenya team, Dorcas encouraged the management of ACK St. Monica School to prepare their students to participate in the upcoming Special Olympics Games. She also expressed her commitment to partnering with the school to facilitate the involvement of these children in the event.

Deputy Governor Justus Mugo echoed the sentiment of inclusive education by urging parents not to hide their mentally challenged children, emphasizing their rights and skills. Embu Woman Representative Pamela Njoki encouraged parents to register their children with disabilities for a government stipend to support their daily needs.

Senator Alexander Muchangi, addressing the students, highlighted the presence of lawmakers with disabilities in parliament and encouraged them to aspire to greatness in their lives.

Overall, the visit to the school served as a platform for advocating for the rights and empowerment of children with disabilities, as well as highlighting the need for improved provisions and support in educational institutions.
