Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa spoke out against the recent surge in violence against women in the country. She specifically mentioned the recent murders of two women in Airbnb accommodations as shocking reminders of the pressing need to address the issue of violence against women in society. Jumwa expressed her strong disapproval of the continued targeting, victimization, and shaming of women, especially on social media platforms.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the government’s commitment to ending violence against women and promoting a culture of respect, equality, and safety for all genders. She assured that her ministry would collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible for these crimes are swiftly brought to justice. Jumwa also urged anyone with information about these incidents to come forward and assist the authorities in their efforts to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators.

Jumwa’s statement comes in the wake of several alarming cases of violence against women. The first incident involved the murder of socialite Starlet Wahu, 26, in an alleged Airbnb in South B. The second case was a gory murder in Roysambu, where the body parts of a woman were found stuffed in plastic bags and dumped by a dustbin. Another incident saw the naked body of a middle-aged woman found dumped on the roadside in Juja, Kiambu County.

In response to the incidents, Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua advised the public to verify the legal status of Airbnb establishments before booking for safety purposes. He expressed concern about the recent criminal occurrences in the short-stay accommodation sector and emphasized the importance of verifying the registration and license status of facilities to ensure compliance with government directives and maintain quality standards.

The recent surge in violence against women has sparked widespread concern and calls for thorough and comprehensive investigations into these cases. Jumwa and Mutua’s statements reflect the urgency and seriousness with which the government is addressing these disturbing occurrences and seeking to ensure the safety and protection of women in society.
