Somalia continues to grapple with security challenges as recent arrests have shed light on the ongoing struggle against militant groups in the country. The government announced the arrest of 16 individuals in connection with the attack on a prestigious hotel near the presidential palace in Mogadishu on March 14. The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) revealed that among the suspects, one was identified as the “mastermind” behind the attack.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Information, the key suspect was also accused of facilitating the smuggling of vehicles used by al-Shabab militants in the attack. In addition, four individuals who were registered as owners of two vehicles used by the militants were also apprehended. Furthermore, the government is investigating five members of its own security personnel who were stationed at checkpoints that the attackers passed through.
The attack on the hotel unfolded when five al-Shabab militants stormed the premises after detonating a vehicle-borne explosive device outside the building. A prolonged battle ensued, leading to the eventual overpowering of the attackers the following morning. The government did not disclose the specific timing of the arrests or provide further details on the remaining suspects in custody.
Minister of Information Daud Aweis emphasized the government’s commitment to apprehending those responsible for such acts of terrorism. He highlighted the significance of sending a clear message to the perpetrators that the government and its security forces are resolute in protecting the public and maintaining stability.
In a separate incident, al-Shabab insurgents launched a deadly attack on government forces at a military base located south of Mogadishu. The assault on Busley base resulted in the loss of approximately seven soldiers and 10 militants, as reported by a security officer present at the scene. Al-Shabab claimed a significantly higher casualty figure, stating that 57 soldiers were killed in the attack. However, this claim could not be independently verified.
