The Nollywood community was rocked by heartbreaking news on Wednesday when popular actor Jnr Pope tragically drowned while shooting a movie. Just hours before the unfortunate incident, he had shared a video on Instagram of himself on a boat, unaware of the dangers that awaited him at Marine Cable Point in Asaba during the movie shoot.
Junior Pope, whose real name is Pope Obumneme Odonwodo, was a versatile talent in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Born on May 7, 1984, in Bamenda, Cameroon, he later moved to Nigeria at a young age. He was not only a vibrant presence on screen but also a brand influencer and content creator with a massive following on Instagram, boasting over a million followers.
During his time in Nollywood, Junior Pope made a significant impact as both an actor and a movie producer, appearing in over 100 films. His journey in the industry began in 2006, attending auditions and starting with minor roles before landing a breakthrough role in the movie “Secret Adventures” in 2007, directed by Tchidi Chikere.
Known for his versatility, Junior Pope could portray various characters ranging from criminals to villains, armed robbers, militants, and hitmen. His talent was duly recognized with awards such as the Nollywood Most Promising Actor in Nigeria at the Entertainment Factory Awards in 2010, as well as accolades from the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards and the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
On April 10, 2024, tragedy struck as Junior Pope was involved in a boat mishap while filming on the Anam River in Anambra State. Alongside three others, he faced this unfortunate accident while returning from a movie location. Just the day before his untimely passing, he had shared a video of himself on a boat, a moment that now holds a chilling significance.
